Until recently, the only way to treat a life-threatening food allergy was through avoidance. Food oral immunotherapy or OIT, is a safe and effective way to decrease the fear associated with accidental exposure to allergenic foods and to actually be able to ingest and enjoy the allergenic food.
Our physicians are among a select group of doctors in the United States with extensive experience in oral immunotherapy. Our physicians have over 10 years of shared experience with this treatment modality. They have successfully desensitized patients of all ages to allergenic foods including peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, soy, wheat and shrimp. In our oral immunotherapy program, the concerning food item is gradually reintroduced, starting with tiny doses and increasing slowly to the full dose over the course of 4-6 months.
This form of immunotherapy is conducted only under close medical supervision in our clinic with weekly office visits and oral challenges. Our physicians at North Texas Allergy & Asthma Center can evaluate for food allergy and determine whether you or your child are a candidate for food oral immunotherapy.
